Mountain Rose Herbs receives
"The Bold Steps To Sustainability Award"
from the Mayor of Eugene, Kitty Piercy.
Mountain Rose Herbs was recently recognized by the City of
Mayor Kitty Piercy made the announcement to the public at the Good Earth Home and Garden Show Saturday, January 26th at the beginning of the Solar Home Tour. Managing Director Julie Bailey and Operations Manager & Director of Quality Control Shawn Donnille accepted the award on behalf of Mountain Rose Herbs whose bold steps include the creation of a zero waste work environment amongst many other criterions.
In addition to this, Mountain Rose Herbs converted to 100% renewable energy by transferring its conventional electrical power usage to renewable energy sources, credits, and development through the Carbonfund and is also running company vehicles on bio-diesel.
To be honored with the Mayor’s award each nominee of the Bold Steps Towards Sustainability Award must submit an application which is reviewed by a committee and given approval based on the environmental, social and economic merits outlined in the application. The application consisted of 41 questions and included
- Do you offer health care insurance?
- Do you have a charitable giving program?
- Do you provide educational assistance to all employees?
- Do you provide real living wages?
- Do you have energy reduction plans implemented?
- Do you have programs in place to eliminate or reduce the use of toxic materials?
- Do you have a recycling program?
- Do you employ the use of alternatively fueled vehicles?
This is just a brief listing of the many questions which Mountain Rose Herbs had to answer, and of course we enthusiastically answered yes to each one!
The recent nomination for the mayor’s award clearly demonstrates our commitment to a world where any business can truly incorporate social benefits and ecological improvements without delay, and we would like to encourage every green business to do the same. While our ecological practices has gone from good to great, we realize that we are far from perfect. With that said we have made many bold plans for 2008 and we look forward to having you all guide us through the journey!
