Clary Sage Essential Oil

Botanical Name: Salvia sclarea
Parts Used: Steam distillation from the top portion of the flowering plant.
Note Classification: Medium-Top
Aroma: Sweet, musky and green aroma with a heady almost intoxicating effect.
Largest Producing Countries: Russia, Siberia, Hungary, Morocco, Bulgaria, Eastern European countries.

Traditional Use: In its raw form it was originally used during the middle ages and renaissance as folk medicine in European countries. Since then, Clary Sage has virtually dropped from modern plant medicine.

Potential uses and benefits: A good addition to massage oils to ease tension and cramps. Used sparingly; 2 to 3 drops in a bath will have the same relaxing and euphoric effect. An uplifting, yet relaxing and mildy aphrodisiac aroma in a diffuser. Common ingredient in hair oils and, "masculine" scents. Traditionally used in dream blends, a little is sufficient as it can easily be too stimulating particularly for the sensitive, the very young and the elderly. Estrogen-like properties make it potentially useful for menopause situations like hot flashes. For the same reason it should be avoided by those with estrogen related conditions like cysts and fibroids etc.

Blends Well With: Many floral oils, particularly Lavender.

Notes: Used commercially to flavor tobacco.

Safety Data: Use sparingly and in moderation. Potential skin irritant. Do not use in combination with alcohol, prescription or recreational drugs. Not for long term use. Not for use while pregnant or nursing.
