Traditional Use: Used as a flavoring agent in most major food categories; also used for flavoring tobacco.
Properties: Antiseptic (pulmonary, genitourinary), antispasmodic, antiviral, bactericidal, carminative, diuretic, expectorant, and stimulant.
Benefits: Bronchitis, catarrh, chronic coughs, congestion, cystitis, indigestion, leucorrhea, piles, sinusitis, sluggish digestion, throat infections, and urethritis.
Blends Well With: Allspice, black pepper, cananga, galbanum, lavender, rosemary, and other spices.
Of Interest: The seeds have a local stimulating effect on the mucous membrane of the urinary and respiratory tracts, and the powder was found 90 percent clinically effective in treating amoebic dysentery.
