Of Interest: Vanuatu Sandalwood comes to us from the South Pacific Island Nation of Vanuatu. The government of Vanuatu has regulated the cutting and exportation of Sandalwood trees and has introduced an effective replanting program. Each year upwards of 15,000 young nursery-grown Sandalwood trees are planted on various islands within the archipelago. Young trees are made available to village farmers as well as individual families to plant within ancestral plots and the local forests. The trees thrive and even reproduce; families care for them, and thus a high value, renewable, culturally adapted source of income is provided at the family level. With a 98% indigenous population, intact forests, good soils and adequate rainfall, Vanuatu is the world's model for a sustainable Sandalwood economy.
