Also known as- Pterocarpus santalinus, and should not be confused with Santalum album which is the aromatic sandalwood.
Introduction
Red Sandalwood was traditionaly used as a diuretic, anti-diarrhea and stomachic but in modern times it is used as a natural dye to color herbal mixtures and toothpaste and has become one of the most popular natural dyes used today.

Contains red pigments benzoxanthenone derivatives, santalin
Parts Used
Only the dark-colored heartwood is used.
Typical Preparations
Infusions or decoctions of wood chips. Powder taken in encapsulations that can withstand digestive fluids. .
Summary
The bark is known as ‘chandanam’ in Sanskrit and is used in Ayurvedic medicine. Its use as a dye can be complicated and it is best to refer to the published work you are working from for coloring purposes.
