The plant’s root contains berberine, a bright yellow plant constituent thought to be responsible for its wellness-supporting properties. A member of the Berberidaceae family, Berberis vulgaris is a thorny shrub with small, oval leaves and clusters of yellow flowers ripening into oblong, red berries. The shrub also features yellow bark, similar to its cousin, Oregon grape. Barberry’s tart fruits ripen in the late summer or early autumn and are less bitter than cranberries.
Barberry root and berries have both been utilized in traditional healing methods such as western folk herbalism, Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Native American healing practices.
