Native to eastern and central North America, boneset was once widely used in early American folk herbalism and has a long history of use in traditional Native American healing practices. The herb was bestowed its common name, boneset, after being the premiere herb in treating an outbreak of Dengue Fever in early colonial America–a virus where the bones feel as if they are breaking. Although typical preparations often include a warm infusion, boneset extract is also a valuable method for receiving the beneficial properties of this herb.
Eupatorium perfoliatum is a perennial member of the Asteraceae or daisy family. Growing 2 to 4 feet tall with a long, hairy stem, boneset is topped with 10 to 20 white flower heads blossoming from June to September. Boneset is a common plant that likes to grow in wetland habitats throughout the eastern half of North America.
This useful plant has been employed for its healthful properties by Native Americans for generations. As a traditional healing herb, it was utilized for a range of beneficial properties including as a diaphoretic and digestive tonic. Some tribes also used boneset in external applications. Early American settlers learned about the wellness supporting properties of boneset from local Native Americans and the herb became instrumental in maintaining health during several outbreaks. Eventually, Eclectic herbalists also adopted boneset into their healing repertoire and utilized the herb in many of the same ways.
A bitter herb, boneset can be combined with aromatics such as mint or ginger to make an infusion more palatable and increase compliance. The dried aerial portions of boneset are typically prepared as a warm infusion but can also be prepared as a cold infusion, liquid extraction, or topical preparation depending on the specific need.
