Product Details

While folklore states that this revered herb is associated with Brahma the Hindu God of intellect, brahmi’s scientific name translates to “energy of universal consciousness”. Needless to say, brahmi has been utilized for centuries in Ayurveda as an ally to support the mind, learning, and concentration. Reportedly, spiritual devotees would consume the herb as a nootropic to help them memorize long hymns and scriptures.

Bacopa monnieri is a creeping perennial, native to India and Sri Lanka. Frequently found in tropical regions on the Asian continent, brahmi has since migrated to parts of North and Central America, particularly the Florida wetlands. A member of the Plantaginaceae family, the plant grows small white flowers and has thick leaves that resemble those of a succulent. Growing naturally in marshy, wet environments, brahmi is frequently cultivated in aquariums due to its ability to grow and live in water.

Brahmi has a long history of use in Ayurveda for balancing all three doshas and for its beneficial qualities. Traditionally, brahmi has been used as a nervine and to promote intellect and overall life energy. In addition to promoting a sense of calm, brahmi was historically utilized as a tonic herb. Brahmi can be eaten fresh as a juicy addition to salads or dried for use in healing applications. In Ayurveda, brahmi is considered energetically cooling and is typically steeped as an infusion, macerated as an extract, or infused in oil for topical use. Occasionally, gotu kola (Centella asiatica) is also referred to as brahmi but is a different plant entirely.

Made from fresh aerial portions in small batches, our organic brahmi tincture is consciously macerated. A bitter extract, brahmi can be taken alone or combined with other herbs. We especially love blending brahmi with nootropics such as rosemary extract or gotu kola extract or a warming, digestive herb such as ginger extract. Brahmi herb can also be used in hot tea or cold infusions. Add to a squirt or two of brahmi extract to your morning spring green tea or various herbal teas throughout the day such as blossoms of health, dream tea, or happy tummy tea.
