Brassica juncea is a member of the extensive Cruciferae family, commonly referred to as the mustard or cabbage family. An annual that is native to Asia, brown mustard has toothed or frilled leaf edges and boasts masses of bright, yellow flowers. Brown mustard is also known as Chinese mustard, Indian mustard, and vegetable mustard.
In Asia, the plant is enjoyed for its edible green leaves, either fresh on salads in spring while they’re small or boiled and sautéed as they get larger and more bitter. Brown mustard seeds are typically more pungent than yellow mustard seeds and appear in a diversity of cultural cuisines. They are popular additions to pickling and brine blends, condiments, and homemade whole grain mustards.
Besides its culinary uses, brown mustard seeds have also been traditionally employed topically for wellness support. Greek physician Dioscorides first described a topical mustard plaster almost two thousand years ago, and it remains a popular folk remedy today. Mustard seeds can be incorporated into body care recipes, including herbal baths and foot soaks. Our clearance brown mustard seeds are organic.
