Garcinia fruits are large, orange-sized fruits with a fleshy, dark purple exterior and seedy interior. The kokum tree, Garcinia indica, is an evergreen tree in the mangosteen or Clusiaceae family and is native to western India. Its fruits have been utilized as a culinary ingredient, employed for its healthful qualities, its wood is used in industrial applications.
The fruit, referred to as garcinia fruit or kokum fruit, contains five to eight large seeds. The seeds have a high oil content and are pressed to make kokum butter, an ingredient often used in cosmetic recipes. The fleshy exterior of garcinia fruit is sour with a distinct flavor. It is often used as an alternative to tamarind in curries and dal dishes. In western India, the fresh fruit is made into a refreshing beverage.
