Garcinia fruits, also called kokum fruits, are large with a fleshy, dark purple exterior and seedy interior. Native to western India, Garcinia indica is an evergreen tree in the mangosteen family. It has been used as a food crop and in industrial applications for centuries. Garcinia fruits have also been employed in Ayurvedic practices for their healthful qualities.
The fruit has five to eight large seeds which have a high oil content. They are pressed to make kokum butter, an ingredient often used in skin care recipes. The outer, fleshy part of the fruit is sour and has a distinct flavor. It is often employed as an alternative to tamarind in curries and dal dishes. In western India, the fresh fruit is made into a refreshing beverage.
Our clearance garcinia fruits are organic and fair trade. They can be simmered to make syrups or incorporated into smoothies, beverages, and culinary dishes for a unique, sour flavor.
