Product Details

Gentian is an herb of the high alpine pastures of the Alps and the Himalayas. Gentian’s genus name Gentiana, is derived from Gentius, the king of ancient Illyria, who supposedly discovered its therapeutic values. Various gentian species have been employed in traditional European herbalism and other global healing practices for thousands of years since it was first discovered, and today holds a spot in the official Pharmacopoeias of many countries throughout Europe.

Gentiana lutea is specifically native to the mountains of central and southern Europe. A member of the Gentianaceae plant family, gentian is an herbaceous perennial with a tall stalk that supports several star-shaped, yellow flowers. It has an intensely bitter root which was occasionally used in ancient brews and is typically employed in herbal bitters and liqueurs.

Bitters have historically been a staple of many diverse herbal traditions and were especially savored throughout Europe, a custom that continues to be enjoyed today. Bitter is a taste that signals to our body to prepare for food, ultimately supporting digestive system vigor. Bitter herbs are therefore taken regularly for their beneficial properties as well as their taste. While the bitter flavor is becoming increasingly popular in the United States, the widespread acceptance of bitter herbs and vegetables still have a long way to go.

Gentian has a history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) spanning millennia. The bitter root was employed in TCM as a liver tonic, in support of memory, and in recovery situations. The beneficial properties of gentian were similarly utilized in traditional European herbalism. Some species of gentian have even been employed in Ayurveda as a digestive tonic.

Organic gentian root is macerated with organic alcohol at our extract facility in Eugene, Oregon to create an excellent, quality liquid extract. Gentian root tincture is very bitter to taste and can be taken on the tongue or in warm, still, or sparkling water. Gentian extract can also be added to homemade bitters blends for a delicious and healthful treat. Gentian tincture blends well with bitter and aromatic herbs such as catnip extract, artichoke extract, or fennel extract.
