This herbaceous perennial is native to the Mediterranean and Russia. The plant prefers full sun and dry, alkaline soils. Inoculate soil with rhizobium for best results. The root can be harvested after two to three years of growth. Scarify the seed and sow in warm, fast-draining soil. Work up in pots, then thin or transplant seedlings to two to three feet apart. It can take years to establish a good plot of licorice. This is an excellent crop for areas at elevation where the predominant weather is clear and hot.
