Orris is a type of European iris that were traditionally grown near Florence, Italy. The ginger-like rhizomes are dug up in August. After being stripped of their rootlets and bark, they are dried until they have a chalky appearance. Dried orris root has a pleasant smell that is reminiscent of fresh violets. It is often used as a fixative in sachets, body powders, and homemade cosmetics.
