White willow is native to North America, northern Asia, and much of Africa. This plant is a low-growing deciduous tree bearing long, green, tapering leaves and catkins in spring. The grey-brown bark is stripped from young trees in the spring. Salix alba is commonly steeped as a tea or tinctured.
White willow has a very long history of use. Native American healers employed the bark well before the landing of Columbus or the Vikings. White willow has been utilized in Traditional Chinese Medicine for many centuries and is referred to as “bai liu pi”. The transition of willow bark to aspirin began in 1828 when German chemist Felix Hoffman isolated the active ingredient and named it salicin. In 1899, the Bayer company began manufacturing and selling a modified form of the willow bark chemical acetylsalicyclic acid, or aspirin. This pioneer of the modern miracle medicines has been a pillar in the treatment of joint pain ever since.
Made in small batches at our extract facility in Eugene, Oregon using organic alcohol, our organic white willow extract is made with care and quality. This liquid tincture is earthy in flavor and aroma and is best taken in water or juice. White willow extract blends well with other extracts including turmeric, ginger, or devil’s claw. It can also be added to a cup of tea such as turmeric chai tea.
