This spreading groundcover is native to all temperate zones, even as far north as the Arctic. The plant greatly prefers soils that were heavily manured or composted the previous growing season. Sow in fall or spring–mix small seed with sand to stretch it, then strew seed on surface, press in, and keep evenly moist until germination. Chickweed grows best in cool soils. Harvest fresh leaves for a wholesome, succulent, and tasty salad green. In zone seven and up, the plant may grow large enough to be harvested even in midwinter.
