Overview

While bees tend to be the more celebrated and famous of the pollinators, butterflies also do a lot of heavy lifting. This is because butterflies can travel longer distances helping to ensure the pollination of plants over a larger area. Plus butterflies are attracted to red flowers which bees cannot see. In addition to enjoying the productivity boost that pollinators can bring to a garden, seeing the poetic flutters of butterflies going from plant to plant is sure to brighten your day.

Each Butterfly Lover Seed Set contains one packet each of:

Aromatic aster (Aster oblongifolius) This herbaceous perennial boasts hundreds of showy violet blossoms from summer to fall. Featuring slightly aromatic foliage, butterflies have been known to flock to this plant.

Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) This perennial herbaceous plant features an erect raceme with deeply lobed, vibrant crimson flowers with a characteristic lip-shaped petal near the opening of the flower.

Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) Well known in the world of traditional herbalism, this species of echinacea is an herbaceous perennial featuring cone-shaped purple blossoms that bloom in the late spring and summer. This plant is a favorite of both bees and butterflies.

Gayfeather (Liatris spicata) This herbaceous perennial has narrow basal leaves that bear magnificent spikes of purple flowers which butterflies are highly attracted to.

Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) This herbaceous perennial produces beautiful, fist-sized clusters of cream-colored blossoms with an amazing aroma. Attracting many butterflies, including monarchs, this plant provides a great source of food and habitat for butterflies.

Showy milkweed (Asclepias speciosa) This plant attracts butterflies, bees, moths, and even small birds that aid in pollination. Featuring showy clusters of pink and white flowers, this herbaceous perennial is sure to attract a plethora of pollinators to your garden.

Mexican sunflower (Tithonia rotundifolia) This gorgeous plant features soft, velvety leaves and beautiful orange blossoms. It is native to the drylands of Mexico, so it can tolerate drought, but the plant will produce better flowering displays with regular watering.

Wallflower (Cheiranthus cheiri) While technically considered an herbaceous perennial, this plant is often grown as a biennial. These plants produce divine springtime blooms in abundance, featuring a mix of brightly colored orange, yellow, and red flowers, all with an intoxicating aroma.
