Ulmus rubra is a species of elm and member of the Ulmaceae family. The large deciduous tree is native to the eastern half of North America. Slippery elm has broad, oblong leaves and brownish-red bark, reaching heights up to 60 feet. Slippery elm bark has been used by Native American tribes throughout the tree’s native range for hundreds of years.

The inner bark is mucilaginous and has many traditional uses internally and externally. Indigenous tribes would eat the inner bark as a gruel in times of food scarcity and employed the same plant material topically as a poultice, as well as in support of the throat, proper digestive functioning, and more. European settlers learned of the tree from the Native Americans, incorporating its many uses into their own unique folk herbal practices.

Slippery elm has a sweet taste that is reminiscent of oat porridge. Because of its thick and slimy properties, slippery elm bark is often used as a demulcent or emollient. Today slippery elm bark is typically added to herbal teas or powdered and added to smoothies, sprinkled on food, extracted as a tincture, or encapsulated.

Organic slippery elm bark and pullulan capsule. These vegan capsules are made from pullulan which is naturally fermented from tapioca.

Precautions
Slippery Elm should be taken with at least 250 mL (8 oz.) of liquid. Orally administered drugs should be taken one hour prior to or several hours after consumption of slippery elm. The mucilage may slow the absorption of orally administered drugs. We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.
