Product Details

A visually striking plant, blue vervain is a beloved botanical found across North America, especially thriving throughout the Great Plains. The herb grows abundantly in prairies, meadows, and open woodlands and is also commonly called American blue vervain and wild hyssop.

Verbena hastata is a member of the vervain family with small, blueish-purple flowers that bloom in upright spikes throughout summer. Blue vervain has an erect, branching, square stem hosting opposite leaves with double-serrate margins. Vervains hybridize easily and there are over 300 known species in cultivation and the wild. Although the roots have occasionally been used in some historical herbal practices, it is usually the flowering aerial portions of the plant that are employed today.

Uses of vervain date back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. The herb has a long history of use in traditional European herbalism for its many beneficial properties including its use as a bitter nervine. Additionally, blue vervain has been utilized for its healthful properties for centuries by Native Americans and later by American folk herbalists. Blue vervain is considered energetically cooling, helping to bring the vital life force energy downward. It can be drying in the long term but is generally recognized as moistening in the short term. Blue vervain is extremely bitter in taste and is often added to a wide range of herbal formulations. The herb was traditionally steeped as blue vervain tea but can also be tinctured, made into a syrup, or incorporated into bath and body products like foot soaks and creams. Folklorically, it was also used as an ingredient in pagan love potions.

Our blue vervain extract is made from flowering aerial portions and is handcrafted in small batches by our expert team. Characteristically bitter, this liquid extract can be combined with a range of extracts depending on its intended use. We especially like calendula extract, dandelion root extract, wild lettuce extract, or oats extract to create a personalized, homemade blend. A squirt or two of blue vervain tincture can also be enjoyed in juice or water or added to a range of teas such as 21st Century Tea or Grateful Heart Tea.
